I didn't enjoy college, so I dropped out early with a clear goal in mind. I want to become a programmer. I had little basics of HTML and CSS. I found an offer on the site vibration.sk and I spoke to them. They were also looking for complete juniors to join their training program.
They sat me next to senior programmer Martin in a separate office and I immediately started working on real projects. No nonsense and I was thrown straight into the water. With sharks.
First, I started preparing the HTML templates and tried to create the required columns with bootstrap. I gradually added SASS, compiled bootstrap, bits of javascript. The first tasks were more like auxiliary work or support of finished projects. A senior programmer checked everything and guided me. I was also given a lot of lines to study. This is how I got to know gulp, bower, jquery, GIT and started using them all.
The advantage was that I had some experience with graphic programs, because a lot of my work is to make CSS from the designer's output. At vibration we draw everything in Sketch, so I had to learn to work with this vector software.
Then I got a WordPress crash course from Ivan the boss. He showed me the API, the basic building blocks of WordPress, pages, articles, menus, widgets, WP_query. In vibration, we use proven plugins such as Advanced Custom Field, WPML for translations, contact form 7, Yoast SEO. In about two weeks of working on the WordPress client, I managed to prepare the entire website. They still had to help me with deployment, but I can do that now.
When I got started with WordPress, I also started solving templates for ecommerce projects that are in our sellio system. This CMS is also in PHP, but built on the YII framework. So I had to learn PHP as well. In cooperation with the backend programmers, I cut several designs and the eshops are already deployed.

I also learned other important things that I hadn't even thought of before
- How important is output quality testing? I had to learn to look at the output pixel perfect. Check outputs on all possible devices or have the robot checked by colleagues. I don't sign the work myself, but the whole company. Sometimes files happened to me and my boss sent me a printscreen from the iPhone with the subject of the email pipipichi, but we solved everything in the end.
- That it is not about one programmer, but many important roles work on projects such as designer, copywriter, SEO specialist, translator, project manager, back end programmers, tester, content throwers and only the interplay of all together ensures a successful project.
- Organizing work is important. At vibration, we make estimates of the complexity before starting work. We then try to stick to the given estimates and measure each task in seconds. At first I thought that it was sometimes exaggerated, but this way project managers know how to plan projects better, we deliver projects on time and don't burn unnecessary hours. We have things in order and we know exactly what needs to be done when.
- Although I skipped college, in practice I learn much faster on real problems and projects.
Now I plan to improve in vue.js and react, as we also use these technologies. We're making a few web apps in symfony, so I'll get to the backend as well and see if I enjoy it.
I have tried many technologies in a year and I can openly say that I have become a web developer who can easily create everything from large e-shops to demanding presentation sites.
