Typo3: excellent CMS for larger content websites

Within our company, we have added Typo 3 CMS to our portfolio. WordPress is far from being the only CMS system that can be used to create websites. In today's article, we will therefore introduce the main advantages of Typo3. It is a CMS system that is twice as old as WordPress. It is used by large companies such as Volkswagen, Mercedes, Lidl, HP and other companies.

What is Typo3?

The article was revised and updated in May 2026.

Typo3 is a content management system (CMS) that is used to create and edit websites without the need for knowledge of HTML or CSS. At first he only focused on editing websites, but now he can edit the system  content, functionality and design of the website.

It is an open-source system, which means it is free without any license fees. It is used by both amateurs and professionals who contribute to the development of Typo3. This is also one of its great advantages. It is supported by more than 100,000 developers worldwide.

The developer community is constantly improving, expanding and updating the system. It means that problems can be solved with the help of the community, where users have a high chance of finding the exact solution.

Advantages of Typo3

Security

Typo 3 is a proven system that is regularly updated to ensure protection.

Modularity

Probably the most important reason why Typo3 was created is its modularity and diversity. It works well as a script for a simple website as well as a large multi-lingual corporate site.

Extensions

The system offers several thousand extensions that can be installed quickly and easily. You can expand the functionality by adding extensions such as blog, e-shop, AJAX, SEO optimization, statistics, discussions, chat, newsletter, registration, photo gallery, video presentations, forms, etc.

Connection

Typo 3 offers the possibility of integration with any system or platform, such as ERP systems or modules, reservation systems, analytical software, accounting and the like.

Elastic administrative system

Many systems allow only one administrator. Typo3 will allow people to add a variety of permissions, from a regular user who surfs the web to an administrator who manages the site. Users can also be added to groups such as editors.

Content types

There are a number of content types that can be defined in Typo3. This gives you a lot of control over the layout of the website where you can add photos, videos, forms, tables or text.

Support

The Typo3 home page has extensive documentation as well as discussion. Here you will find a lot of information and help regarding the use and modification of the script.

Restore settings

The system allows restoration of previous settings in case of unwanted changes. In the case of a large portal with several administrators, this option is advantageous. You can restore previous changes to your website with virtually no restrictions.

Changing the structure of the website

One of the most important advantages is the possibility to set up a web structure without any pre-set blocks, sections or articles.

Internal TypoScript language

The script has an internal language called TypoScript, which will allow you to create a number of parts such as static HTML with dynamic content.

Technical advantages of CMS Typo3:

  • a flexible open source system based on PHP and MySQL,
  • use of SEO URLs,
  • separation of content and layout, valid XHTML/CSS code,
  • extended framework used to extend the website (Extension manager),
  • community-created extensions (similar to WordPress plugins),
  • extension of caching options and options for manual recovery and static page generation,
  • a simple page structure that allows you to categorize websites into pages and folders,
  • Rich Text Editor in the form of WYSIWIG editing,
  • photo editing that uses tools for resizing, cropping, and others,
  • AJAX drag & drop editing,
  • built-in search tools,
  • frontend editing,
  • the ability to assign roles for individual team or group members,
  • settings for people with impaired vision (high contrast or larger font),
  • connection with Magento e-commerce software.

Disadvantages

Installation and control

Typo3 is not the easiest CMS to install and set up. It also takes longer to understand and learn than WordPress. While content management in Typo3 is easy for editors, administrators need basic knowledge of scripting, but for programmers, working with the system is a tougher nut to crack.

It has advantages and disadvantages

Typo3 is a versatile CMS system that can be used for simple websites as well as advanced portals with different types of content. However, in terms of programming, it is more demanding than other systems. Modularity and expansion are important features, but unfortunately this means less efficiency and higher demands on server resources. Overall, it is more suitable for larger content websites and portals.
