Magento, the company behind the popular e-commerce platform, has officially announced the end of its Magento 1 platform. After a decade of development, the platform will see its end in June 2020.
If you are one of the e-shops that use this platform, you have several options to choose from. Stay with Magento and move to Magento 2, or switch to another platform, which includes e.g. our solution Sellio. In the article, we will look at individual options and their advantages.
The article was revised and updated in May 2026.
What is Magento 1?
In 2007, Magento launched its open source CMS platform Magento 1. The market liked it very quickly. In its first year, it won several awards and attracted the attention of several large investors. In 2011, eBay owned 100% of Magento. It was subsequently resold by Adobe in 2018 for the considerable sum of $1.68 billion.
Versatility, powerful features and ease of use made Magento 1 a big hit in the ecommerce industry. Today, this popular open source CMS accounts for 12% of all e-shops worldwide, with approximately 250,000 active sites running on Magento 1.
These users must now switch to Magento 2 or migrate to another e-commerce platform.
Switch to Magento 2
At first glance, this may seem as simple as just installing an update and changing the number, but it is not. Magento 2 is actually built on a completely different architecture. Overall, it's a great platform, but it needs just as much work to improve as if users were to switch to a completely different platform.
Costs must also be taken into account. Although the Community Edition of Magento 2 is still free to download, smaller sellers who paid for Magento 1 may find the additional cost of Magento 2 a reason to look elsewhere.
Switching to another system

In addition, this platform is fully extensible with native plugins from WooCommerce and extensions and themes from WordPress. The company itself offers over 350 plugins.
PrestaShop
PrestaShop is one from the leading platforms on the market. It represents the golden mean between the complex the performance of Magento and the simple functionality of Shopify. Like all open source solutions mentioned above, PrestaShop takes advantage of the freemium model.
The software allows sellers to create a completely editable, up-to-date e-shop in a few minutes, without license fees or sales shares (as e.g. Shopify has. More than 239,000 e-shops operate on PrestaShop, of which 1973 are in Slovakia. This platform has over 500 built-in functions. They cover the basics needed to start selling.
